AMAZON'S ALEXA has added yet another string to her bow with the ability to send SMS messages using just your voice. If you aren't familiar, standard messages require both you and the recipient to have the Alexa app to communicate.

It only takes a couple seconds, but Amazon gave consumers their first listen to Alexa's new voice. Then, Alexa will find a way to send that person a message.

As you can expect, the SMS integration only works for users with Android devices.

Now there is no way to send emojis in texts through Alexa.

When it comes to smart speakers, your two best options lie with ones powered by the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. There are also other voice assistants able to send SMS texts.

You need to sign up for Alexa's Calling & Messaging feature within the Alexa app. Open the app and head into the Conversations tab. Then tap "Contacts" and "My Profile" then toggle the "Send an SMS" button to turn on the feature.

Approach your Echo device, which should be powered on and connected to your local Wi-Fi, and say, "Send an SMS to [contact name]". You'll be informed that the message has been sent, but it won't be read back before it's carried away. Previously, she could only sed messages to contacts who have the Alexa app installed on their smartphone.

You should be aware that carrier charges apply, text-to-911 is not available, and MMS (picture messages) and group messages are not supported.

The new feature is only available in the USA for now, and will only work if you have the Alexa app installed on an Android phone and have linked your phone with your Alexa device.
