A USA -led coalition in Syria killed more than 100 troops allied with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday.

The U.S. coalition says in defending its own troops, it killed an estimated 100 pro-Assad regime fighters on Wednesday.

Regime forces operating Russian-made T-55 and T-72 tanks fired 20-30 tank rounds within 500 feet of the SDF base, where some US troops were embedded, according to Pentagon press secretary Dana W. White.

"In defence of coalition and partner forces, the coalition conducted strikes against attacking forces to repel the act of aggression", it added, asserting its "non-negotiable right to act in self-defence".

No U.S. personnel were injured in the attack by the pro-regime forces, unnamed officials separately told U.S. media.

Nebenzia said it was also "regrettable" that the Security Council wouldn't support a statement that Russian Federation sought Wednesday following an attack in Damascus that damaged its trade mission. The Syrian Observatory said those involved and killed by the strikes were tribesmen loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and Shia militias of Afghanistan.

One hundred and twenty of those who were granted amnesty entered the ranks of the USA -backed SDF umbrella group, according to Nebenzia.

The forces were "likely seeking to seize oilfields in Khusham that had been a major source of revenue for [IS] from 2014 to 2017, the official said".

A deconfliction line establishing the Euphrates River as the divide between the rival forces was negotiated between the United States and Russian militaries a year ago, and until now it has served to mostly keep the armies apart. The Syrian army is supported by Iranian-backed militias, Lebanese resistance Shitte group Hezbollah and Russian forces and contractors. That official also said the military assesses that some of the Russian contractors were killed in the United States counterstrike. The nationality of militias that attacked USA -supported forces is equally unknown.

The Euphrates River, flowing through Northeastern Syria, serves as a demarcation line between the USA backed SDF and Russian Federation and Iran backed pro regime forces believed to be active around the city of Deir el-Zour.

Syria's regime and pro-Assad Russia were furious with the strikes.

With the defeat of Islamic State in most of Syria the coalition and the Syrian regime share a long "de-confliction" line mostly along the Euphrates river. "Coalition officials were in regular communication with Russian counterparts before, during and after the thwarted PRF attack". That could complicate not only the U.S. -Russia relationship but also American involvement in Syria. One of the fighters from the Syrian democratic force which is comprised of mostly Arab and Kurd fighters allegedly sustained wounds in the attack. In June, the coalition shot down a Syrian warplane near Raqqa, accusing it of getting too close to its local ground forces.
