US Puts Hamas Chief Haniyeh On Terror Blacklist

Before he stepped down, Alami was reportedly involved in ceasefire talks with Israel and was involved in the release of a captured Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, in 2011.

Hamas has fought three wars with Israel since 2008 and is held responsible by the United States for the killing of 17 Americans in attacks.

The US government also slapped sanctions on Harakat al-Sabireen - a small militant group that splintered away from the Islamic Jihad, is close to Iran and operates in Gaza - and two other groups active in Egypt: Liwa al-Thawra and HASM.

Hamas says the designation will not deter it from opposing Israel. "Today's actions are an important step in denying them the resources they need to plan and carry out their terrorist activities".

Imad al-Alami was "examining his personal weapon in his home" in early January when the gun accidentally went off, shooting him in the face, said Hamas, a group that has been listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. Department of State since 1997.

The State Department similarly designated three groups - two Muslim Brotherhood splinter groups, and one Iranian-backed group - as terrorists.

"We reject and condemn the decision and we see it as a reflection of the domination by a gang of Zionists of the American decision", he said.

Westbrook's 37 lead Thunder past 76ers for 8th straight win
Oklahoma City went on a 12-0 run, and a reverse layup by Westbrook put the Thunder up 86-79 and forced the 76ers to call timeout. The Pistons (22-25) have dropped their past seven and are 12-22 following a promising 10-3 start.

Alami was described by the Post as a Hamas "hard-liner" who supported the group's "ties with Iran".

The Islamist organization has fought three armed campaigns against Israel since 2008.

Haniya replaced Khaled Meshaal, who now lives in Doha in exile, atop the Hamas movement.

Originally founded to assist Palestinian refugees from the 1948 war that established the state of Israel, UNRWA continues to operate 70 years later, providing humanitarian assistance and social services to residents of almost 60 refugee camps in the areas neighboring Israel. Unlike Meshaal, Haniya will remain in the Gaza Strip.

US President Donald Trump declared in December 2017 that his administration would begin a years-long process of moving the American embassy in Tel Aviv to Quds.

He said the announcement "crossed every red line" and called on Palestinians to resist it: "This Zionist policy supported by the United States can not be confronted unless we ignite a new intifada".
