Based USS Carl Vinson Making Historic Port Call in Vietnam

The San Diego-based aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson will make a historic port call in Vietnam, the first time a ship of its size has visited that country since the end of the Vietnam War.

The U.S. and Vietnam first announced in January that the USS Carl Vinson would be making a stop in Vietnam, and Hanoi's diplomats have been working to calm their Chinese counterparts ever since.

The ship, which is called the Carl Vinson, will dock off Danang, which is the main Vietnam port that has been the landing area for American ships for many years. Danang saw heavy fighting during the war as the site of a major USA military base, but those gathered showed no sign of bearing a grudge.

"Through hard work, mutual respect, and by continuing to address the past while we work toward a better future, we have gone from former enemies to close partners", Kritenbrink said in the Navy statement.

The USS Carl Vinson and its contingent of 5,000 sailors and aviators are expected to anchor the 95,000-ton carrier 2 nautical miles off the port of Danang.

That effort appears squarely aimed at providing a check on China's use of its military and economic might to expand its influence in Asia. But ongoing tensions in the South China Sea loom over the trip as Beijing continues to build artificial islands capable of hosting military installations - much to the chagrin of Vietnam and other claimants to the sea.

In January, the Defense Department labeled China and Russian Federation "revisionist powers" seeking to undermine the global order.

Around 5,500 sailors will set foot on vietnamese soil in the first visit by an American aircraft carrier since the v\Vietnam war. The carrier also stopped in the Philippines in February.

It will replace the Apple iPhone 8 that has a dated design when compared to other premium smartphones in the market. A dual-SIM system would thus cut short this waiting and make customers in Asian countries like India happy.

Top leaders from both the United States and Vietnam discussed the possibility of an aircraft carrier visit past year in an effort to further relations.

The U.S.S. Carl Vinson is set to arrive in Vietnam for a historic visi in response to China's growing presence in the South China Sea.

The U.S. avoided the potentially more provocative choice of having the Carl Vinson visit Cam Ranh Bay to the south, which is closer to the Spratly Islands, whose sovereignty is disputed among parties including Vietnam and China. "Increased cooperation between the two countries in economic, diplomatic and military areas would serve as a counterbalance to Beijing's expansionism".

Separately from this week's mission, USA officials have said American warships would continue sailing without prior notice close to the China-occupied islands and atolls, an aggressive way of signaling to Beijing that it does not recognize its sovereignty over those areas.

The nomination of Adm. Harry Harris, the highest commander of U.S. forces inthe Asia Pacific region, as USA ambassador to Australia is expected to further enhance cooperation between Canberra and Washington in issues relating to the South China Sea.

Kirby said the carrier's arrival in Vietnam sent a clear signal.

This drives Vietnam to cooperate more closely with the USA and Japan as it seeks diplomatic leverage against China.
