BJP's conquest of India's Northeast

The Congress lost Meghalaya and failed to score a single seat in Tripura and Nagaland.

While the Congress may publicly say that voters reposed their faith in the previous Mukul Sangma-led government, the BJP's credibility had taken a hit following concerns that the party may impose a beef ban in the Christian-majority state where bovine meat is consumed in large amounts.

Moving on to Meghalaya, Surjewala said every discordant party that fought BJP and each other, "ideologically-politically-electorally", is sewn up to form the government at any cost - NPP+UDP+PDF+HSDP+BJP+Ind.

With the curtains having been drawn to the Nagaland Assembly Election 2018 on March 3 with the completion of vote counting, it became clear that the NDPP-BJP alliance weaved its magic as they managed to garner 29 seats together. With the three states coming under the NDA umbrella, the number of states being ruled directly by the BJP, and through alliances, has jumped to 21.

After the poor Congress performance in elections in the Northeastern states, the results of which were declared on Saturday, the party's morale was at a low, with no leader willing to speak out about the loss. The BJP won 35 seats on its own, giving it a majority in the 60-member Tripura Assembly.

Gold bribes given in $2 billion Indian bank fraud case
The ED had previously issued three summons to both the accused in over 12,000 crore fraud, directing them to appear before it in February.

The BJP had contested Tripura elections with its regional ally, Indigenous People's Front of Tripura.

Rio, a three-time chief minister and a senior leader of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), staked claim earlier in the day to form a coalition government in Nagaland, saying he has the support of 32 MLAs.

Despite the BJP's success in Tripura, "it will not be possible at all to get through in West Bengal and Odisha". Sarma is now the BJP's chief strategist in the northeast region, and is credited with the success that the saffron party has made electorally in the region.

Interestingly, nearly all the northeastern states where BJP has come to power in the last two years share one common feature - one party or alliance was in power for a decade or more before BJP and its allies took over.

From being an insignificant player in the Northeast's politics, the BJP has come a long way since its emphatic win in the national parliamentary polls almost four years ago.
