The memorial, named "Monument For Our Kids", included a pair of shoes for each child killed by gun violence in the United States. The shoes were a way for families to remember the children they lost from gun violence and from recent school shootings.

Handler and MIdler apparently donated shoes themselves, as did Susan Sarandon, Alyssa Milano, Hayley Mills, Colm Meaney, and others.

The massacre was the deadliest school shooting since 20 children and six adults were shot dead at Sandy Hook more than five years ago.

Tuesday's memorial comes nearly a month after 17 people were killed in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The advocacy group Avaaz organized the event, which began 8:30 a.m. ET, with families of the victims placing their shoes on the South East lawn in the "Monument for our Kids" tribute installment.
