Man shoots and kills himself in front of White House

People ran down the sidewalk along the north side of the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue after a man fired a gun on March 3.

"At approximately 11:46 a.m., a white male victim suffered a self-inflicted gun-shot wound to the head outside the North White House Fence", the release stated.

White House security was also considerably tightened around the perimeter. Law enforcement authorities have identified the victim but are withholding the man's name pending notification of his family, the spokesperson said.

Secret Service agents raced to the site following the shooting at around 5pm United Kingdom time on Saturday.

The man has since died; no one else was injured in the incident, the Secret Service spokesperson said.

President Trump and his wife Melania are not now at the White House, instead staying in Florida at the Mar-a-Lago resort.

A police spokesman told USA Today: "The adult male who reportedly shot himself has been declared dead".

"We are aware of the incident", White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley told CNN.

It happened just a week after a vehicle ploughed into a security barrier near the President's home.

"His body remained on scene".

There has been a number of security incidents at the White House in recent years. "We are working to notify next of kin".
