The Swiss skier finished 14th.

Just weeks after the 2018 Winter Olympics, Mikaela Shiffrin secured her second straight overall World Cup title at a giant slalom race on Friday in Ofterschwang, Germany.

"It was a pretty tight race, so it was not easy to go into the second run and think, 'Oh, yeah, I'm fine, ' and to just ski", Shiffrin said.

Shiffrin was a clear favorite to successfully defend her maiden overall title when she won the first five races of 2018.

Shiffrin had to settle for fourth in her favoured slalom in South Korea. Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel won the event by 0.74 of a second, her first career victory.

Shiffrin is only the second American female skier to win multiple overall titles, behind speed specialist Lindsey Vonn who has won four.

United Walks Back New Bonus Lottery System that Angered Employees
The memo announcing the program reportedly said a maximum of 1,361 employees would receive a bonus each quarter. United Continental has about 88,000 employees.

The season-ending World Cup finals are next week in Are, Sweden.

The 22-year-old secured back-to-back crystal globes following giant slalom gold at the Pyeongchang Olympics last month. The win was her 11th this season, her sixth in eight slaloms.

Her 11th win of the season ties her mark from past year and is the third most ever on the women's circuit behind Vail's Lindsey Vonn, who won 12 races during the 2011-12 season and retired great Vreni Schneider of Switzerland who won a record 14 races during the 1988-89 season. "Hopefully, I'm not going to be feeling a lot of nerves (in Are) because there is not a lot of risk".

Friday's result stretched Rebenburg's lead over Shiffrin to 101 points, leaving the American out of contention for the GS title.

"For sure I have a big lead", Shiffrin said.

With Saturday's victory, Shiffrin clinched her fifth World Cup slalom title in six seasons. There was no immediate update on the Slovenian skier's condition.
