Why Uber and Lyft want to take you to the hospital

As part of the partnership, Allscripts is going to integrate its Sunrise electronic health record (EHR) with the Lyft Concierge API so healthcare providers can request rides within their own platform. For the 3.6 million patients across USA cities who miss or postpone their scheduled appointments due to transportation issues, no-show rates are as high as 30 percent.

"Our partnership with Allscripts is an important next step towards reaching our goal of cutting in half the number of Americans that face transportation issues to medical appointments by 2020, as we work to ultimately improve people's lives with the world's best transportation", Renwick continued. Just a few days after Uber announced the launch of Uber Health, Lyft followed suit, partnering with Allscripts to enable clinicians to order the Lyft service for their patients. If yes, the system will communicate with Lyft to schedule a ride for the patient.

The ride-hailing firm has been testing Uber Health with a beta group of hospitals and doctors since July, but the service is officially launching starting on Thursday.

HIPAA Compliance. To ensure Uber Health meets HIPAA standards, the company has been working hard to develop, implement, and customize numerous safeguards. "Patients without a smartphone can still use Uber Health through text messaging or opt to receive a call with trip details to their mobile phone or landline instead". The platform pushes an SMS alert to passengers about the scheduled ride and the business provider typically covers the cost.

Uber said 3.6 million people miss or delay appointments due to a lack of reliable transportation.

'While transportation barriers are common across the general population, these barriers are greatest for vulnerable populations, including patients with the highest burden of chronic disease, ' Uber explained in a blog post. It's somewhat of literally the last mile, or the last lock of health care, getting the patient involved and making it easier for patients to get to appointments.

Although there was little to no detailed information regarding billing during the announcement, organizations would be able to easily monitor what they were spending on transportation as well as see monthly billing statements, scheduling and appointments.

However, Jay Holley, head of partnerships at Uber Health, told the Atlantic that this shouldn't be a problem.

With Uber Health, there may be a grey area concerning liability if, for example, a patient faints in the backseat of an Uber.
